SPECTRO Analytical Instruments Managing Director Professor Heinz Falk to Retire
Kleve, Germany, December 21st, 2001 - SPECTRO Analytical Instruments announced that Professor Heinz Falk, Managing Director, has elected to retire effective January 1st, 2002.
Professor Falk graduated with a PhD in Physics from the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1968 and continued his career with the renown Academy of Sciences in Berlin. In 1972, Professor Falk was named one of the youngest Professors of the Academy and shortly thereafter was appointed as Deputy Director of the Institute for Optics and Spectroscopy. In 1989 he joined SPECTRO as the Director of Research and Development and in 1991 was appointed as Managing Director.

Oxford reports strong first half, sees slowdown ahead. Recorded revenues of 104 Million pound in the first half of fiscal 2002 to 30th September 2001, a 36% increase over 78,5 million pound achieved in the first half of fiscal 2001. Pre tax profit was 6,1 million pound, in contrast to the 363000 pound reported for the year ended period. In the analytical division, sales increased by 58% to 44 million pound, following the receipt of record orders in the second half of last year Operating profit increased tenfold to 4,1 million pound. However, new orders in the first half of this year were down 18% as a result of the slowdown in the semicondutor market and the continuing weakness in the US market generally. However, in the second quarter, orders dropped significantly. As a result management prdicted reduced sales in the analytical business in the second half year.

Bruker has filed for an IPO of common stock that could raise as much as $100 million AXS is concentrating on the growth industries of drug discovery and development with its integrated solutions for protein structure determination via X-ray crystallography, a market that totalled approximately $1Billion in 2000 and is expected to increase by 40% per year to $5,6Billion in 2005 With the acquisition of X-ray diffraction specialist Nonius BV in April this year, AXS has secured X-ray source technology and according to the company, positioned itself as the leader for small molecule diffraction instrumentation supplying 80% of instruments" for this market.

Oxford sees growth after merger. Oxford Analytical acquires measurement firm. Oxford has purchased the assets of CMI international. Making the UK company's fist move into measurement systems.Oxford has paid $2,2 million in cash for CMI, a manufacturer of thinm film measurement systems based on technoilogies including XRF and a market leader in the USA.

Formed from the merger of Oxford Instruments’ industrial analysis and microanalytical (High Wycombe, England) is now benefiting with a strong international order book, according to managing director Charles Holroyd. Oxford Instruments Analytical specialises in instruments and components for the industrial and laboratory analysis, including lab, benchtop and process XRF systems, EDX and WDX for electron microscopy and microanalysis and the process NMR. The company also designs and supplies products for the deposition and etching of materials for markets including telecommunications and optoelectronics.

The company said:" The spectrometer now being produced in the UK not only meets the demanding level of specification, but is also producing faster and better quality results.
